Most of us must be aware of the launch of Samsung galaxy S5 yesterday. It comes with a host of new feature missing from Samsung phone including Fingerprint Scanning.
Samsung is not the first one to implement bio-metric scanning, apple iphone 5s was the first mobile device to successfully implement and popularize bio-metric fingerprint scanning. But that was merely a security feature which was being used by the device itself for its internal security.
Let’s explore the horizons
Bio-metric security is without a doubt one of the most advanced and powerful security measure in existence but lets not go deep into the technical aspect of the security instead lets talk about the application.
If bio-metrics means security then one can’t help but ask the possibilities that arise from it. The next logical question is- where do we need the security to be implemented? what functional domains of life do require and more importantly support that security?
- Banking Services - any banking app and website.
- Online-Payment Service - Paypal, 2checkout, authorize dotnet
- Email accounts and cloud services - Google Drive, One Drive, Gmail ect
- Content Management Systems
- Universal Remote Control systems - Beacon, Red-eye, TiVo.
Let us take a scenario
Imagine you are in your car and far away from home on official tour. You suddenly get a reminder to pay your electricity bill. for that you need to have access to your customer ID which is safely secured in a document on the cloud of Google drive. You access the Google drive app on your cellphone and it asks to scan your fingerprint for the password. After retrieving the ID you open the website to pay your bill.
You choose to pay with your Paypal account and it asks you to scan your fingerprint. You initiate the transaction but suddenly you lose signal and the transaction fails. You again perform the transaction but are unsure if the amount was deducted twice so you open the website/ app of your bank to validate the transactions that have took place.
Here again your fingerprint and an additional facial recognition(using your cellphone’s front camera) awaits you to reciprocate. you check and find out that the first transaction was cancelled.
You get a notification on your device which shows a new comment entry on your company’s forums by a customer. you see that the comment is negative and moderation is required. The website asks for your fingerprint for admin access verification and you remove the comment by logging in your WordPress account..
Your suddenly receive a call from your wife who has problems operating the new TV. She is unable to access the channels she wants to watch because of the child lock you applied the day before yesterday. You open your TiVo app, scan your finger for security and unlock the TV for the time being.
Now you can relax and focus on your work without having to worry about the matters at hand and you can have your piece of mind as you are the only one who can access your digital assets.
This can be a scenario in the very near future of your everyday life. What do you think?
